The Comrads

Dear all,

End of April 2005, NGO The Comrads was born in Belgium...

Today, we are happy to celebrate our 5th anniversary with you!

In 5 years, we raised 100.000 Euro for charity, organized 24 fundraisers, gathered thousands of people from over 50 countries and cultures. But above all, we built a strong and long-lasting structure that collaborates with grassroots organizations in developing countries and assists them in their growth.

Today, we are helping one organization in particular in South Africa, the Mpumalanga HIV/AIDS TB Association (MATA), active in TB/AIDS prevention and care. More concretely, since January 2010 we are financing the salary and actions of a project assistant to MATA, Ms. Alison Manuell. Together with her, we are boosting MATA's internal organization, communication and fundraising efforts.

On January 12, 2010, the hopes of millions of Haïtians were ruined by an earthquake. NGO The Comrads was able to act as a transit platform for support to local partners working with earthquake victims.

The coming months, you will hear more from us about a Music Festival and the annual Comrads Beach Run in Belgium. Be there and help us make this world an ever better place!

Thank you for helping us help others!

In name of NGO The Comrads,

Geoffroy Timmermans.

» Spring successes in South Africa

The prospect of another newsletter allows us to take stock of the last few months; the highs, the lows, the little wins and, increasingly, omnipresent challenges of keeping a remote partnership fruitful, interesting and personal. And so to the evidence...

  • The procurement of a laptop for MATA. Currently the project director, Msanyana Skhosana is sharing his with Alison. They are out of the office for a considerable amount of time on average and this extra resource will allow them to be more mobile and efficient.
  • Development MATA's fundraising and communication abilities. They have produced a revised monthly newsletter, to be sent out to Home Based Care centres and other target groups and a new website should follow shortly.
  • We have been analysing their entire patient data statistics (anonymous) for the preparation of MATA's 2010 Annual Report and as a basis for a review of their data quality.

» Fellowship 2010: Sophie Hirsch to intern at MATA

3rd year German medicine student Sophie Hirsch will spend the month of August with MATA.
The 22 year old's 4 week internship will not only be a valuable personal experience but will allow The Comrads to get a new and improved insight into care management at the Home-Based Care level.
Sophie will start a blog shortly.
